About me

My name is GUNDEGA. I am coming from Latvia – a small country in North-East of Europe, with long-term knitting traditions. I moved to Germany in 2016. This move changed many things in my life – both personally and professionally.

Knitting is not my profession, it is my hobby, which has flourished since I am away from Latvia. Knitting is not a business, not a way to make money. For me, knitting is expression of all my positive emotions and it is my art.

This website is my GALLERY. It includes pictures of my latest knits. There is a story of the inspirations that motivated the creation of every knit, but to keep the privacy of the people involved, I will not publish these stories, only the pictures.

Knitting is my way of communicating. Knitting something for someone is my way of saying thanks for friendship, but sometimes I knit as an introduction, as a way of saying that I would like to become friends.

I like to knit for my relatives – this way, despite of thousands of kilometers that separate us, I feel closer. It gives me great pleasure when someone wears my knittings, it makes me feel closely connected, a way of bridging the great distances that separate us.

I like to knit for my new relatives – to say that I am part of their family, and that I care: I learn about them, I think about them, and I am happy to be their friend.

Knitting friendship – is the moto of this website. I still have a lot to knit – I have many friends, whom I have not yet thanked for their friendship, and I hope there will be more.

I do not have many friends in my new hosting country – Germany. Acually I have faced an extremely unwelcoming attitude from my colleagues. Maybe it is because I am too hard working, because I care about what I do, because I do not plan my time around official working hours and ever-present vacations. Maybe it is because I am not born in Germany…Maybe there are another reasons unknown to me. But I believe that so far I just have not met the right people.

During last years I have spent a lot of time in the USA, and I have visited many yarn stores. It has surprised me, how open and friendly the knitting community is in the yarn stores! Every yarn store has its own club of fans, who meet there to learn from each other, or just to knit together and chat. Because of my time-demanding work, I have not been able to join, but I would like to do so in the future. I would like to bring this knitting social tradition to my home country, if/whenever I will return there. But currently – I knit alone, but I do it everywhere – at home, in public transportation, at the beach..wherever I can keep needles and my yarn balls around me.

I believe, there are many people who share my friendship knitting concept. I would like to make new friends – with people who love knitting like I do, for whom it is a way of life. I would like to learn something new from them and share my knowledge and skills if anyone would like to. And this way – we will become knitting friends!
