I knitted my first pair of socks when I was 10. Socks are easy to knit, sometimes even boring. Very often I knit socks when I have a long travel, or a nice movie to watch, as knitting them does not require much attention. For me, socks are a very practical and functional apparel. The main function of the socks – to keep the feet warm and dry.
With years, I have changed my mind – socks can be also a nice, personal ornamental design element, still keeping its basic functions. This way I have knitted socks as presents to many people – embedding in them my very simple Latvian wisdom – one can function and feel much better, if keeping feet warm and dry!
The modern sock yarns allow to knit beautiful ornamental socks from a single yarn (self-pattern), but sometimes I still prefer developing some unusual color patterns, that are individually matched to the person who will wear the socks.
I have also learned that socks, as well as mittens, have numerous varieties of casting on, binding off, knitting a heel and forming a toe. Some of these elements are based on national traditions, some – on functions ( e.g. heel type and the shape of the foot). Most of my socks (before 2021) are knitted using a similar pattern – a ribbed cuff, a turned heel with heel flap and a rounded toe. In order to make the sock knitting process more challenging and interesting for myself, I learned some new techniques, which show in the latest sock models. Not all of my socks have been photographed, but here are examples of the most important groups of the socks: socks knitted from a self-pattern dyed yarn, socks with designed ornamental color pattern, family (or “the couple”) socks, and kids socks. Kids socks I will present in the kids page.

Very often, when I buy sock yarn, I can knit more than one pair from this yarn. In order to use the sock yarn rationally, I have developed a “couple” concept of the socks. – a bigger size for a man and a smaller size for a woman.

These two pairs of socks also can be considered as the “couple socks”, as the basic blue self-pattern yarn is coming from the same ball. 2021.
However, these socks were already inspired by Kerstin’s Balke “Colorful Knit Soxx – 26 Sock Patterns for Warm, Happy Feet” book – a new ornamental pattern was developed, and the new (for me) methods were tested: the Italian cast-on, the “boomerang heel” and the “anatomical” bind-off. 2021.
